Recently New Line Home Video has released a series of movies on DVDs that contain rated and unrated versions on the same disc. “Embrace Of The Vampire” is one of these films, and in effect you get four versions of the same film on this dual layer disc. Anamorphic widescreen and fullscreen versions each one either R-rated or completely unrated. It is your choice.

The transfers on this DVD are good looking, however there is quite a bit of grain visible in the film print which creates an image that is never really stable. The graininess also creates some slight compression artifacts that are evident upon close examination. However, these problems are never distracting from the actual film. The colors in this presentation are vivid and strong, nicely reproducing the many carefully lit nighttime scenes with their atmospheric blue and red hues. Blacks are deep and highlights never over-accentuated.

The disc contains an English 5.1 channel Dolby Digital mix as well as a Dolby Surround track. Especially the Dolby Digital mix convinces with its very natural sounding, wide frequency response and the use of split surrounds to enhance the ambiance off which the entire movie feeds. The track has plenty of punch and great dynamics, giving the movie great aural support.

“Embrace Of The Vampire” is an almost gothic romantic horror story about a college freshman, played by an enchanting Alyssa Milano, who is the object of desire of an age-old vampire. He comes in her dreams and arouses her lust and passion like no mortal ever could. Unlike many of the European erotic horror films from the “Redemption” series, this movie has a very slick and modern look. Nudity, eroticism and horror are molded together to form a sexy tale that is spiced up with some atmospheric gothic horror elements.
