Continuing their periodical release of ’Star Trek: The Next Generation, ’ Paramount has released the entire second season of the series as a DVD package that is basically identical with the first season. The packaging is the same, boasting a slightly different color for identification, and one disc less than the first season.

In total you get all the 22 episodes that made up the series’ second season, as well as some additional buns material to accompany them, like a mission overview for that season and a selected crew analysis, pretty much in vein with their counterparts from the first season release. Also included are briefings and memorable missions, as well as a look at the sets, props and background information as part of the ’Inside Starfleet Archives’ supplement.

Once again, the episodes are all presented in their original fullscreen aspect ratio. Compared to the first season, it is now evident that the production value of the second season was higher and the image is noticeably better. Less grain and better definition gives this season an improved and sharper look, although the opening credit sequence is still quite blurry and noisy. Colors are natural, though a bit muted, and the image has good blacks and solid shadows.

The audio on the DVDs are presented as new 5.1 channel Dolby Digital remixes that are quite efficient and give the series an updated feel. Surrounds are engaged frequently and the tracks make good use of the improved frequency response the format offers.

Paramount is releasing a solid follow-up to the first season of ’Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ here and give fans the chance to collect all the episodes in chronological order in the best possible quality.
