Lionsgate brings Chaplin to Blu-Ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has just announced the release of the Chaplin: 15th Anniversary Edition in high definition in February of next year – just about 4 years too late. Why they didn’t wait another year and turned it into a 20th anniversary edition is anyone’s guess, really.

Robert Downey, Jr. captures the essence of comic genius Charlie Chaplin in a compelling, nuanced performance that earned him Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor. Director Richard Attenborough’s well-crafted portrait traces Chaplin’s impoverished London upbringing, extraordinary success as an actor and director, his troubled marriages, scandalous affairs, shocking elite to Switzerland and his triumphant return to Hollywood. The huge star-studded cast includes Kevin Kline, Dan Aykroyd, Milla Jovovich, Diane Lane and Geraldine Chaplin (as her own grandmother), and Downey’s astonishing mimicry of Chaplin’s gait, gestures and accents complete a dazzlingly authentic portrait of one of cinema’s first pop culture icons.

No specific details have been announced at this time but expect to find all the bonus materials from the DVD version on this release, such as the Featurettes “Strolling into the Sunset,” “Chaplin the Hero and ”The Most Famous Man in the World“, as well as the ”All At Sea” Chaplin Home Movie.

“Chaplin” has been scheduled for release on February 15 for $19.99.
