The African Queen finally bows in digital glory

It may be hard to believe, but one of the most anticipated films to debut in digital home video, the classic The African Queen, is finally arriving on Blu-Ray Disc this March.

The Blu-Ray Disc features a new 4k digital restoration of the movie, and Paramount Pictures wanted to ensure that the film would look as beautiful as ever. A special screening of the original MPAA archive print was arranged for cinematographer Jack Cardiff whose comments on the print and what needed to be done were recorded. These recordings were then used as audio notes for the restoration team. This means that the film has been restored and remastered as per Cardiff’s audio notes.

Paramount Home Entertainment will also follow the same release model as they did previously with “Forrest Gump – Sapphire Series” with a single-disc Blu-Ray Disc release and a premium Blu-ray Disc box set.

The release is presented in 1080p widescreen with restored English mono audio and additional audio tracks with are yet to be announced. The single-disc version will feature a sole bonus feature, namely the Full-length Documentary “Embracing Chaos: The Making of The African Queen” which includes materials from Jack Cardiff’s estate.

In addition, the Commemorative, Limited Edition Box Set will include the”Lux Radio Theater presents The African Queen” Radio Broadcast on Audio CD, Senitype Film Frame Collectable, Collectable Postcards, Reproduction of Katherine Hepburn’s Out of Print Memoir “The Making of The African Queen or How I Went to Africa with Bogart, Bacall and Huston and Almost Lost My Mind”.
