How The West Was Won returns in all its Cinerama glory

We have just received word that Warner Home Video is in the process of creating a new DVD version of How The West Was Won, scheduled for release in August as a 2-disc Special Edition.

With courage, sinew and conflict: that’s how the West was won. With three directors, five interlocked stories, some of the most legendary action scenes in movie history and a constellation of acting talent: that’s how “How The West Was Won” was filmed.

Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart and John Wayne are among the big names in this big-event saga following a dauntless family’s move West through generations – underscored by the spectacles of a heart-pounding raging river ride, a thunderous buffalo stampede and a bracing runaway train shootout.

Warner’s new release will be a heaven-sent for all fans of the film as it will for the first time on home video present the film in its original form. Using the Cinerama technology which consisted of three independent 35mm film frames projected next to each other to create a truly larger-than-life image, the technology has never been properly transferred to home video before, resulting in a series of unsatisfying releases of this film over the years. With this new release and digital wizardry, Warner has finally been able to create a transfer of the film that combines these three films strips seamlessly without blurry lines, without cropping or other defects, allowing you to see every bit of detail in the picture.

As if that weren’t enough of a selling point, Warner is also including the 2002 Feature-length Documentary “The Making of How The West Was Won” as well as a Commentary Track featuring a selection of film historians.

Prepare to see “How The West Was Won” like you’ve never seen it before on August 26 when this incredible DVD set arrives in stores.
