New details are in on the HD-DVD set of Star Trek: The Complete First Season from Paramount Home Entertainment. There’s some good news, and some bad.

First the good news. The set will come with some cool new features, and will contain the special features from the DVD first season box set and apparently the footage from the bonus Best Buy disc. The features will be as follows; Starfleet Access, a picture in picture feature with video commentaries and comparisons to the original footage for the episodes Where No Man Has Gone Before, The Menagerie, Part 1, The Menagerie, Part 2, Balance of Terror, The Galileo Seven, Space Seed and Errand of Mercy, the documentary Spacelife: Transporting Trek into the 21st Century on the remastering process, the much talked about Billy Blackburn’s Treasure Chest: Rare Home Movies and Special Memories 8mm footage from the set of the origianl show, an interactive Enterprise tour and an advertisement for an upcoming video game on the HD-DVD side. On the DVD side are some of the featurettes in standard def along with the featurettes The Birth of a Timeless Legacy, Reflections on Spock, Life Beyond Trek: William Shatner, To Boldly Go… Season One, Sci-Fi Cisionaries Kiss & Tell: Romance in the 24th Century, Trek Connections, Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier and episode trailers (it is unclear if these are the original trailers or the trailers for the remastered eps, but since the rest of the features are ported straight from the DVD release, the originals are likely.).

That’s decent, but here’s the bad news. The original episodes will not be included in any form. There was talk at the beginning of the remastering project of upgrading all the original film, even the replaced footage to be made on HD. This may have happened, but it’s not on the set. That means to see the original episodes, you’ll have to hold onto your DVD set. Also, it appears the text commentaries may be missing from the set. And of course there’s the big bummer. The set comes with a price tag of $217.00!
The set arrives on November 20th. Save up your money if you want to buy this set.
