Roots gets a thorough treatement

Warner Home Entertainment is planning a large box for a large series. Roots, the mini-series to end them all is coming to DVD sa a special 10 disc edition. For a more complete collection. Warner is also releasing Roots: The Next Generations and Roots: The Complete Collection.

Based on Alex Haley’s best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family’s saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte’s grandson gained emancipation.

Five years later, could there be a worthy follow-up to the most-watched miniseries ever? “We felt the other did so well,” Alex Haley said, “that we should just let it hang there.” But Haley began carrying around a tape recorder, dictating more of his family’s tales as they came to his memory. Those remembrances filled a 1,000-page transcript: raw material for Roots: The Next Generations.

On October 9th, the five disc Roots and the four disc Roots: The Next Generation arrive for $59.98. A complete set including the 1988 special Roots: The Gift will also be available for $119.98. Sadly, The Gift will not be available as an individual release (and is not currently available on DVD).
