Warner launches A Scanner Darkly and Dog Day Afternoon in high def

We just got word that Warner Home Video will release HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions of A Scanner Darkly and Dog Day Afternoon in April.

Set in a not-too-distant future where America has lost its “war” on drugs, “A Scanner Darkly” centers around a character named Fred, an undercover cop, who’s one of many hooked on the popular drug, Substance D, which causes its users to develop split personalities. Fred is obsessed with taking down a notorious drug dealer named Bob, but due to his Substance D addiction, Fred doesn’t know that, in fact, he is also Bob. Based on a classic novel by Philip K. Dick (“Blade Runner”), the film stars Keanu Reeves , Winona Ryder , Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson.

Based on a true incident, Al Pacino and director Sidney Lumet reteam for the unique thriller “Dog Day Afternoon,” filled with sardonic comedy, that earned six Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and won an Oscar for Frank Pierson’s streetwise screenplay. Al Pacino plays mastermind Sonny and John Cazale is his partner Sal — two optimistic nobodies who set out to rob a bank, resulting in an unexpected media circus and complete disaster.

The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the movies will feature 1080p high definition transfers and come with the same bonus materials found on the previously released DVD versions. Look for both films in stores on April 10 with a $28.99 sticker price.
