Jet Li kicks it up a notch in Fearless

Universal Home Entertainment has just announced a DVD and a HD-DVD/DVD combo version of Jet Li’s Fearless for December, ringing out the year in style.

Legendary Hong Kong director Ronny Yu is teaming up with Jet Li in this film to bring to life the martial arts legend Huo Yuanjia, who became the most famous fighter in all of China at the turn of the 20th century. With stunt choreography by Yuen Wo Ping, this is reportedly the last period film that Jet Li will be doing, as he wants to focus his efforts on other films.

The HD-DVD will feature an unrated version of the movie in a 1080p encoded transfer with 5.1 channel Dolby Digital Plus audio in Mandarin and English. The film will offer up a selection of subtitles also, of course. In addition the release will a selection of Deleted Scenes and the Featurette “A Fearless Journey”.

On the flip side of the disc you will find the DVD version of the film that is also sold separately. It contains the rated and unrated version of the movie as well as the deleted scenes and the before-mentioned featurette.

Since this is a HD-30/DVD-9 combo, Universal is finally able to provide the bonus materials of the film on the HD-DVD side as well, making these combos a whole lot more attractive as the half-assed pay-extra-to-turn-the-disc-over-for-extras versions we’ve seen before, though the premium still makes no sense in consumer minds, not helping faster adoption of high definition releases at all.

“Fearless” will be released on December 19 and the HD-DVD/DVD combo will have a $39.98 sticker price, while the DVD versions – available in widescreen or pan&scan, respectively – will carry a $29.98 price tag.
