’Highwaymen’ tells the story of a psychopath who is randomly killing women by running them over with his ’72 El Dorado. Rennie Cray (Jim Caviezel) has made it his mission in life to track down the killer after he ran over his wife, and thirsty for revenge he manages to follow the trail of the twisted maniac. As things come to a head, Molly (Rhona Mitra) becomes the involuntary subject of a cat and mouse game between Cray and the killer.

New Line has prepared a gorgeous transfer for this movie in its original 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio. A fullframe version is also included but not subject of this review. The presentation is virtually pristine without blemishes or mars of any sort. Colors are bold and strong, rendering hues powerfully but without over-saturation. Black levels are solid, creating deep shadows and firmly rooting the image. No edge-enhancement disturbs the viewing experience and the compression is also without flaws.

The DVD comes with a dts 5.1 channel audio track as well as a Dolby Digital and a Dolby Surround track. The audio is dynamic and very aggressive, and once again New Line has remastered the audio to best fit home theater environments. The frequency response is wide with deep rumbling basses and clear high ends, free of distortion. Dialogues are always understandable and never drowned out.

This is a solid movie. It has a few hiccups but as a whole it is an intelligently written movie wit ha solid plot and a very exciting ending. It is a bit short, running only 81 minutes, but at least the filmmakers knew how to pack the film with action, drama and thrills. Check it out if you have the chance, and see Jim Caviezel in another great role before he became Jesus in ’The Passion Of The Christ.’
