On Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment’s release of “Hellboy” the studio has added a few exciting hidden features that are not immediately obvious.

Insert the first disc of the DVD set and form the Main Menu play the “Introduction.” Once it is over and you’re back on the Main Menu, press the “Up” arrow key until three small rings are highlighted on the background. Press “Enter” now and you will get to see a brief clip of director Guillermo Del Toro showing off the cue cards he used for the introduction, mocking some of the illegible writing on them.

Now, go to the “Special Features” section, accessible form the DVD’s Main Menu. Highlight the menu entry “Main Menu” and then press the “Down” arrow key on your remote control to highlight another set of rings, which will give you access to a screen with an infamous quote by director Guillermo Del Toro. There are a series of quotes available and you can browse through them using the “Left” and “Right” arrow keys on your remote control.

Finally, back on the “Special Features” menu, highlight the “Main Menu” entry again and now press the “down” arrow key on your remote control twice. This will highlight the crown and give you access to the DVD credits.

But there’s more. It is time now to insert the second disc of the DVD set and on the Main Menu select “Kroenen’s Lair.” In the following screen select “Animatics” and on the following submenu hit the “Down” arrow key on your remote control twice to highlight another set of rings. Now press the “Enter” key and you will get to see an alternate opening scene for the movie presented in storyboard format.

Now select “Board-A-Matic” from the “Kroenen’s Lair” menu. Once again, hit the “Down” arrow key twice, followed by “Enter” and you will get to watch a pre-viz version of the Apocalypse tracking shot from the movie.

Now go to the “Storyboard Comparison” menu, accessible from “Kroenen’s Lair.” Here, press the “Down” arrow key once again and follow it up by the “Enter” key and you will be treated to a multi-angle storybaord-to-film comparison of the space devil hatching sequence.

And yet another one can be found if you go to the “Animatics” in “Kroenen’s Lair.” In the following menu press the “Down” arrow key on your remote control until you highlight another three rings. This will give you the chance to view a short cartoon movie of Cpl. George
Matlin, Combat Photographer.
