Secondhand Lions

On New Line Home Entertainment’s Platinum Series release of the family hit “Secondhand Lions” the studio has added a few more supplements than first meet the eye.

Insert the second side of the DVD, the one with the Special Features and from the Main Menu go to the “Deleted/Alternate Scenes.” There, highlight the “Play All” menu entry and then press the “Up” arrow key on your remote control to highlight the animals. Press “enter” and you will see a clip, which gives you a fun, brief look at how stressful it was for the animal trainers to perch the rooster on the pig for the shot in which Haley Joel Osment is eating eggs and ham and notices the animals watching him. The rooster refuses to stay on the pig! The audio track is missing but it’s still a treat to watch.

Now go back to the DVD’s Main Menu and highlight the menu entry “On The Set With Secondhand Lions.” Press the “Left” arrow key on your remote control to highlight the dog and then press the “Enter” key. This will give you the chance to see a set of outtakes of Haley Joel Osmet’s character Stan unsuccessfully “defending himself.”

A third Easter Egg is located in the “TV Spots” section of the disc. Go there and highlight the “Play All” menu entry. Press the “Left” arrow key on your remote control to highlight Stan and then “enter” to view series of improvised lines delivered by Deidre O’Connell, who plays Helen, the mother of “the relatives” in the film, as she puts down Haley’s Character in the movie.

And then of course, the DVD also contains the obligatory DVD credits if you select the New Line logo on the Main Menu.
