Columbia TriStar expands the Underworld

Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has some good or bad news for fans of Underworld, depending on how much they’ve already spent on the DVD. A New director’s cut with extra features is coming in May as Underworld: Unrated Extended Cut.

In the Underworld, Vampires are a secret clan of modern aristocratic sophisticates whose mortal enemies are the Lycans (werewolves), a shrewd gang of street thugs who prowl the city’s underbelly. No one knows the origin of their bitter blood feud, but the balance of power between them turns even bloodier when a beautiful young Vampire warrior and a newly-turned Lycan with a mysterious past fall in love.

The new release of the film contains 12 minutes of additional footage, plus 11 minutes of footage that replace existing scenes with different angles and takes. Many features from the existing release will be ported over including a director commentary, a technical commentary and the featurettes “The Sights and Sounds of Underworld,” “Creature Effects,” “Stunts” and a making of. New features include a new cast commentary, a 45 minute documentary examining the history of vampires and werewolves, featurettes on cinematography, special effects and production design, bloopers and a production sketch notebook and mini-comic included with the disc.

On May 25th, the Underworld opens again with a suggested retail price of $34.95.
