DVD passes VHS in the rental market

Just yesterday my mother called me to complain that it was harder and harder to find VHS tapes at video rental stores. I scolded her for exaggerating since VHS still dominates the rental market. Well, it looks like I owe her an apology. According the the VSDA, the week ending June 15th marked the first time DVD rentals surpassed VHS rentals. 28.2 million discs were rented out versus the 27.3 tape rentals. While no immediate changes in the video market will happen in the next weeks, market strategies will most likely shift in the longterm concerning both formats now that this line has been crossed.

So I guess my mom is out of luck. Of course, she could always just get a DVD player.
