The Two Towers comes in two releases

New Line Home Entertainment has officially announced the release of the second installment of the trilogy The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Not surprisingly, the formula will follow the release schedule of last years Fellowship of the Ring discs, the most successful title in New Line’s History.

In August comes the two disc theatrical cut of the film. Both fullscreen and anamorphic widescreen versions of the film will be available. Both will come with audio in Dolby Digital. The extras will be a little more well rounded than the discs predecessor with the two documentaries On the Set: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return to Middle-earth, eight featurettes, a ten minute sneak preview of the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Sean Astin’s short film The Long and Short of It and a documentary on the making of the short film, the music video by Emiliana Torrini, and the obligatory previews of the Return of the King video game and the November release of the Special Extended DVD Edition.

Speaking of which, the second set will arrive in November with an extra 40 minutes of footage inserted into the film. The disc will only be available in anamorphic widescreen and will have audio in Dolby Digital and DTS. While unconfirmed, it is likely both tracks will carry 6.1 audio. Extras will be announced soon for the set, but at least one audio commentary will be included.

Arriving on August 26th and November 18th respectively, the theatrical and extended cut are both on the way. The suggested retail price of the theatrical cut is $29.95 with a price for the longer cut yet to be determined.
