Adaptation goes SuperBit

<Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has made the unusual decision to release the recent complicated, if delightful Adaptation as part of the SuperBit lineup.

The extremely creative adaptation of Susan Orlean’s book The Orchid Thief follows the obsessive, if fleeting John Laroche who wants nothing in life other than to observe his precious orchids (and maybe become a millionaire in the process). The film continues to pull back the lens as author Orlean is drawn into the story observing Larouch, screenwriter Charlie Kauffman enters to observe Orlean, and we the audience come along for the ride as we observe Kauffman. The ideas coalesce nicely as not only does the theme of desire adapt and grow from one level of storytelling to the next, but everyone subscribes to the old laws of physics; we all adapt when observed.

In an odd choice, Columbia TriStar has opted to add this only to the SuperBit lineup. For a film with little visual or audio impact, the anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 tracks will likely be excellent, but with so many interesting stories and analysis around the film, let’s hope a regular special edition isn’t too far behind. As a first for SuperBit, a trailer will be included.

Set to arrive on May 20th, the disc will be priced at $27.99.
