Wal-Mart has just announced the upcoming launch of their new mail-order DVD rental service with the slightly unoriginal title Wal-Mart DVD rentals. With the backing of Wal-Mart, the system will be the first major competitor for the long-standing champ Netflix.

Wal-Mart’s service will include 12, 000 titles available for rent, ranging from new releases to arthouse films. A limited number of customers will be able to sign up for the service during the test phase at www.walmart.com. Wal-Mart plans to roll out the service nationwide next year, the company said.
