On BBC Home Video’s release of the science fiction cult classic TV series “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” you can find some additional material if you know where to look.

Insert the first disc of the set and wait until the Main Menu comes up. Now, just let it sit there for about two minutes and the first episode begins to play… or so it seems, because you will soon find out that your DVD player has been taken over by the “infinite improbability drive”!

Another hidden feature can also be found on the Main menu. Highlight the “Set Up” menu entry and then press the “Left” arrow key on your remote control. This will take you to a separate screen where you will have to enter a 4-digit code. Enter 1146 (which is the time of the Earth’s destruction – 11:46AM), and you’ll be treated to some raw footage of the Earth being blown up, followed by some information on the “Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster”!

Now, insert the second disc of the set. On the first menu screen, the Inner Planets, highlight the “Communicate” menu entry and then press the “Left” arrow key on your remote control. This will highlight the hidden planet Earth. Press “Enter” now and you will get to see the complete credit sequence, including the tunnel through the O that was lifted right out of Dr. Who.

Finally, on the Outer Planets menu screen, turn on the subtitles. Then go back to the “Inner Planets” menu screen and press the “Left” arrow key on your remote control. This highlights the infamous words “Don’t panic.” Now press “enter” and you will get to see all the computer readouts for the “Heart of Gold” display screen.
