Schoolhouse Rock finds a home on DVD

Anyone who has ever claimed the American Education system trailed the rest of the world has clearly never seen the animated shorts from Schoolhouse Rock. As unbelievable as it may sound, thirty years have passed since the series launched on Saturday mornings. To celebrate this milestone, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced a definitive collection of all 46 songs, many of which have never been released on video, and one new video created by the original creators exclusively for the DVD.

Conjunction Junction, what’s your function? In the 70’s and 80’s, the catchy Schoolhouse Rock tunes taught millions of children the fundamentals of math, grammar, science, history and money. Relive the pop culture sensation with every song from the landmark series. Among the over 50 tunes are such classics as “Conjunction Junction, ” “Three is a Magic Number,” “I’m Just A Bill” and “Electricity, Electricity.” The DVD features an all-new song about the Electoral College, “I’m Gonna Send Your Vote To College” written by the show’s original creators.

In addition to the forty-seven videos, the disc will also contain several features for the nostalgic, and several features that use DVD to help the next generation learn the basics with even more enjoyment. The “grown up” features include a making of “I’m Gonna Send Your Vote To College” featurette, “Three Is A Magic Number” Nike commercial, an Emmy Awards featurette, audio commentaries by the Schoolhouse Rock creators, and the recently created music videos from contemporary artists. For the younger set, there are “Arrange-A-Song” puzzles and the “Earn your Diploma” trivia game. Finally, to ease navigation, the discs will have “Play-All” and “Shuffle-All” features, and Top 10 and Top 20 jukeboxes.

Movies and television series have had their day on DVD, now its time for Schoolhouse Rock. July 16th is the date it hits shelves and will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99.
