According to some research that MGM Home Entertainment did, the demographics of DVD have changed quite dramatically over the past months. While in previous years DVD fans were eager to obtain widescreen versions of their films, MGM’s research indicates that this focus has shifted. 45% of all DVD users seem to prefer pan&scan versions of their movies over widescreen, and the studio responds by including pan&scan versions of their films on all DVDs as of next year. The transition will be gradual nonetheless starting with selected titles later this year already.
It is not known at this point how the research has been conducted and how representative the result really is, but regardlessly, it is a significant development that can have a long-lasting impact on the industry and the DVD market.
