Julianne Moore stuggles to remain Safe on DVD

Safe, the 1995 paranoia thriller starring Academy Award-Nominee Julianne Moore arrives on DVD this August from Columbia TriStar Home Video.

Todd Haynes’ eerie medical thriller shows us that our environment has finally turned against us. Carol (Julianne Moore), a stereotypical upper-middle class housewife, begins to complain of vague symptoms of illness. She “doesn’t feel right,” with unexplained headaches and many other symptoms. Her doctor dismisses her concerns and refers her to a psychiatrist. Eventually, an allergist tells her that she has Environmental Illness. Her body is rebelling against the chemicals that we inhale, ingest, and absorb daily: air pollution, food pesticides, toxins in our water and the ubiquitous sprays, creams, and emollients used to beautify. She has become allergic to the Twentieth Century. She sees only salvation in a New Age center run by a demagogic. Unsettling and ambiguous, we are never sure about each character has a hidden agenda, as they revolve around Carol, a frightened pawn overwhelmed by her condition.

In addition to an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 2.0 sound, the release will include an audio commentary by Director Todd Haynes, Producer Christine Vachon and Julianne Moore, theatrical trailers, and filmographies for Director Todd Haynes, Julianne Moore, Peter Friedman and Xander Berkeley.

“Safe” will be available on August 21st for $29.95. Pick it up if you think its safe to go outside.
