Game developers switch to 5.1 Dolby Digital for Playstation 2 games

Dolby Laboratories announced that in excess of 30 games titles have so far been confirmed to support Dolby Digital on Sony’s PlayStation 2 console.

The game development community is now firmly behind the 5.1 surround sound format, and including it on many of their forthcoming titles. Acclaim, Argonaut, ATD, Brain In A Jar, Criterion, Eidos, Infogrames, Jester, Microprose Motorsports, Rage, Sony Studios, and Squaresoft are just a few of the companies that have confirmed they will be using Dolby Digital on future PlayStation 2 titles.

“Much of the development community saw the support of Dolby Digital as an obvious choice for their PlayStation 2 titles,” said Dolby’s Rik Ede. “Since the PS2® is able to play DVD movies “out of the box,” many consumers are hooking up their PS2 to a home cinema system, and enjoying the benefits of Dolby Digital 5.1 sound for movie playback. Game developers have seen this as an ideal way to enhance the audio content in their games, and give the player the same kind of audio production values and experiences that exist in Hollywood movies.”
