Some fun Sci-Fi DVDs from Fox: ‘Zardoz’, ‘Alien Nation’, and ‘Enemy Mine’
In the midst of the coming barrage of catalog films from the major studios (we use the word ‘barrage’ as a good thing, by the way), some titles might get lost in the shuffle, so we thought we’d do our part to point up some of the more interesting. Three DVDs due in March from Fox Home Entertainment fill the bill nicely with Alien Nation (1988), Enemy Mine (1985), and Zardoz (1973). Here are the details about each:
Alien Nation is an action-packed blend of science fiction and police drama that finds Los Angeles the new home of 300,000 humanoid extraterrestrials. When a gang of these Newcomers kills a police detective’s partner, he sets out to solve the crime with his new partner—the L.A.P.D.’s first Newcomer detective. But the unlikely pair soon uncover a far more dangerous threat to society.
Directed by Graham Baker, the film stars James Caan, Terence Stamp, and Mandy Patinkin.
The disc will come with a widescreen transfer, letterboxed at 2.35:1. Sound is Dolby Digital 4.1 and Dolby 2-channel Surround, with 2-channel available in French. Bonuses include a ‘making of’ featurette, behind-the-scenes footage, theatrical trailer, and TV Spots.
Zardoz is a cult film from that most fertile period of cult-filmdom, the early 70s. The Vortex is an isolated, heavily guarded, lush community of immortal scientists and intellectuals called the Eternals. Outside the vortex lies a desolate world laid to waste by war and pollution, peopled by the Brutals, primitive savages and killers who worship a fearsome god, Zardoz. But one rebellious Brutal is determined to survive on his own terms, which could threaten the balance of civilization…and possibly destroy it.
Directed by John Boorman (‘Deliverance’), the cast includes Sean Connery, Charlotte Rampling, Sara Kestelman, John Alderton, and Anne Newton.
The disc will come with a widescreen transfer, letterboxed at 2.35:1. Sound is Dolby 2-channel Surround. Bonuses include an audio commentary and the film’s theatrical trailer.
Enemy Mine comes to us from the prolific Wolfgang Petersen, and stars Dennis Quaid, Louis Gossett Jr., Brion James, Richard Marcus, and Tara MacGowran.
Two warriors engaged in a savage, futuristic war between Earth and the planet Dracon, crash-land on a desolate, fiery planet. At first, the human and his reptilian, alien opponent are intent on destroying each other. But after battling the elements as well as each other, the two stranded pilots gradually realize that the only way either of them will survive is to overcome their undying hatred.
The disc will come with a widescreen transfer, letterboxed at 2.35:1. Sound is Dolby Digital 4.0 and Dolby 2-channel Surround, with Dolby Mono available in French. Bonuses include a photo gallery and the film’s theatrical trailer.
All three discs will be coming your way on March 27th for the suggested retail price of $24.98.
