Serious testosterone from Paramount: ‘Death Wish’, ‘The Warriors’, & ‘Juice’

The current trend of releasing catalog films is producing a bumper crop of great releases for fans of many different genres. Now Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment is preparing a few DVDs that have enough macho in them that it wouldn’t be surprising to see them kicking each other off the shelves. This January, fans can expect to see Death Wish, The Warriors, & Juice. Here are some details on each:

Death Wish (1974)

Charles Bronson stars as a bleeding-heart liberal who becomes a vigilante after his wife and daughter are violently attacked by a gang of thieves. Extremely controversial when it was released, the film is a violent exploitation favorite, and even features Jeff Goldblum in his film debut as one of the thugs.

Directed by Michael Winner, ‘Death Wish’ stars Charles Bronson, Jack Wallace, Hope Lange, Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats, William Redfield, Stuart Margolin, Stephen Elliott, and Kathleen Tolan.

The disc will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, with a Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack. The only announced extra is the film’s theatrical trailer.

The Warriors (1979)

Walter Hill’s wild and stylish movie tells the story of The Warriors, a New York City street gang, who are unfairly blamed for the death of a rival gang leader. Now they must fight for their lives against armies of gangs that outnumber the police 5 to 1! This was another controversial feature when it was released, due to much publicized fighting between teenagers in several of the theaters where the movie debuted.

The disc will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, with a Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack. The only announced extra is the film’s theatrical trailer.

Juice (1992)

The lives of four Harlem youths are forever changed after one of them decides to earn the power and respect they call juice through an armed robbery.

Directed by one-time Spike Lee cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson, this tough tale of the streets boasts a powerful young cast that includes Omar Epps, Queen Latifah, Tupac Shakur, Samuel L. Jackson, Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins, Khalil Kain, Cindy Herron, and Vincent Laresca.

The disc will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, with both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and ProLogic audio. No extras have been announced.

All 3 discs are scheduled to hit the streets (was there ever a more apt way of putting that?) on January 16th. Each will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99.
