‘Ordinary People’ and several other goodies from Paramount Home Video

This February, Paramount Home Video will release several terrific films on DVD, which include Ordinary People, Terms of Endearment and it’s sequel The Evening Star, and Alfie. Here’s what we know about each one:

Ordinary People (1980) is a powerful study of family dysfunction from director Robert Redford about the psychological effects of a child’s death on a family. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, the movie stars Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, Tim Hutton (a Supporting Actor Oscar), and Judd Hirsch. To put the film’s quality into perspective: the year it was released, Redford was a guest on The Tonight Show with then-host Johnny Carson. During Redford’s interview with Johnny, Orson Welles made a guest appearance on the show to congratulate Redford on the film, telling him that he wished he himself had made a movie this good. I’m thinking that Bob slept well that night…
The disc will have an anamorphic widescreen transfer with English and French Dolby Digital Mono soundtracks and a trailer.

Terms of Endearment (1983) is a comic/tragic tale from writer/director James L. Brooks that won many Oscars including Best Picture. The movie stars Shirley Maclaine (Best Actress), Debra Winger, Jeff Daniels, and Jack Nicholson (Best Supporting Actor). The disc will have an anamorphic widescreen transfer, and a new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack as well as the original mono track. Extras will include an audio commentary and the film’s trailer.

The Evening Star (1996) is the sequel to ‘Terms of Endearment’, continuing the family saga begun in the first movie. Directed by Robert Harling, the movie stars Shirley MacLaine, Bill Paxton, Juliette Lewis, Miranda Richardson, Ben Johnson, Scott Wolf, and Marion Ross. This disc will have an anamorphic widescreen transfer, with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack. Extras include a commentary by director Robert Harling.

Alfie (1966). Michael Caine stars in the title role in a ribald and wild comedy filled with sex and sin in the swingin’ 60s. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, the movie stars Michael Caine, Shelley Winters, Julia Foster, Jane Asher, Shirley Ann Field, Vivien Merchant, and Denholm Elliott. ‘Alfie’ also comes with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and a newly mixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack. The only announced extra is a trailer.

All of these films will be available on February 27th. The suggested retail price will be $29.99. Enjoy!
