Five more years of Macrovision for Paramount DVDs

Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq:MVSN) announced yesterday that Paramount Home Entertainment Inc. has signed a five-year extension to copy protect 100 percent of its worldwide DVDs and selected VHS tapes.

Macrovision’s copy protection is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of VHS and DVD programming to VCRs without impacting the original picture. Macrovision introduced its DVD copy protection in 1997 and it is now utilized on over 75 percent of all video DVDs distributed by most Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) studios, as well as corporate, educational, and special interest rights owners. Over 250 million DVDs, 3 billion videocassettes, and 40 million digital set top boxes have utilized Macrovision’s video copy protection technologies.

As long as it doesn’t affect the picture or sound in any way, we’re all for it…
