Toshiba introduces currently fastest Laptop DVD-ROM drive

The Disk Products Division (DPD) of Toshiba America Electronic Components, Monday announced the industry’s fastest CD-ROM drive in the 12.7mm form factor, the XM-7102. This product delivers advanced transfer rates, of up to 32x, to mainstream portable computing. In addition to leading CD-ROM technology, Toshiba rounds out its mobile offerings with a 6x DVD-ROM in a slim-line form factor, the SD-C2302.

The XM-7102 with an ATAPI interface not only offers industry-leading transfer rates of up to 4,800KB/sec, but also provides impressive 90ms average random access for quick access to applications.

Toshiba’s introduction of the SD-C2302 slim-line DVD-ROM further demonstrates its optical leadership. With data transfer rates up to 8,112KB/sec for DVD media, and 3,600KB/sec for CD media, the drive provides outstanding multimedia performance for the mobile market. Random access times of 130ms for DVD and 95ms for CD-ROM also contribute to the drive’s superior capabilities.
The XM-7102 and SD-C2302 will be sold primarily through PC OEMs. Sample drives are available now with volume production beginning in September 1999.
