Columbia TriStar Home Video has recently released Mike Myers’ ’So I Married An Axe Murderer’ on DVD in the wake of the ’Austin Powers’ hype. This is Myers’ least successful film and it quickly becomes apparent upon viewing it why this is so.
Myers stars as Charlie, a man who can’t stay in a relationship due to his fear of commitment and paranoia. Then Charlie meets Harriet (Nancy Travis) and falls in love. Unfortunately, Charlie becomes convinced that Harriet is an axe murderer.

While the central premise holds some promise, the execution (!) of the idea is poor. Of course, Myers is funny, but he doesn’t have much to work with here. The highlight of the film is Charlie’s father, who is also played by Myers. If the entire film had just been his one-liners, then it would’ve been a hit.

The Columbia/TriStar DVD of ’So I Married An Axe Murderer’ is a no-frills movie only edition. The film is letterboxed at 1.85:1 and is enhanced for widescreen TVs. The framing is accurate and there is no bending of the picture. For the most part, the picture is clear, but dark at times. The daylight scenes are fine, but the night-time shots are awash in shadow. Compression is well done without noticeable artifacting or noise.

The Dolby Digital 2-channel soundtrack is lively, especially during the musical montages (of which there are many, featuring what we can assume are outtakes of Myers’ playing around on the set).
