Universal is sending another high caliber Collector’s Edition your way with Ron Howard’s “EDtv”. The disc contains a 16×9 enhanced widescreen transfer of the film in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. As expected, the transfer is superb, taken from a meticulously clean film print. It is extremely sharp and highly detailed with fine background definition. Color reproduction of the disc is excellent with rich and warm colors and faithfully rendered fleshtones. Contrast and shadow delineation are excellent, creating a great-looking presentation that is exceptional in its clarity.

“EDtv” contains a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack in English as well as a French Dolby Surround track. Both feature good spatial integration, although the discrete surrounds of the 5.1 track creates a somewhat livelier environment for the bustling scenes. In both cases however the soundtrack is very natural sounding and adds immensely to the film’s presentation.

What seems to be an immediate spin-off of “The Truman Show” turns out to be a fun comedy that is well worth watching.
Although comparisons between the films are inevitable, “EDtv” tackles the issue from a different angle, throwing in some great comedic elements and plot twists in the mix.
