Buena Vista Home Entertainment has released “The Waterboy” in the film’s original 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The image is sharp and well defined, exhibiting no compression artifacts, color bleeding or noise. The compression is very good, as we have come to expect from Buena Vista’s releases. The disc reproduces the film’s colors very faithfully with very natural looking fleshtones and deep blacks.
“The Waterboy” contains a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack that is quite active and engrossing – especially in the sports arena scenes – with a good directional soundfield and good use of the discrete surrounds. The disc also contains a very good French Dolby Surround soundtrack, but sadly any sort of subtitles or captions are missing from this release.
Interestingly, the disc contains a short featurette with cast interviews, although it does not go in depth behnd the scenes. Although the film clearly has its moments, the story is a bit falt and highly predictable. The characters are very clichéy and leave little room for surprise.
