'Blast From The Past' never takes full advantage of its clever idea, but it is funny in parts. Dave Foley plays Eve's roommate, and he steals the show. Fraser is his usual charming self and displays quite a knack for dancing. The main problem with the film lies with Silverstone. She just can't act. Instead of coming across as confused or jaded, she simply comes off as mean and stupid. With another, more talented actress in the role, 'Blast From The Past' could've been something truly special.
As it stands, I can only recommend it due to the strong performances by Fraser, Foley, Walken, and Spacek.
Continuing their tradition of fine DVDs, New Line's presentation of the film is very nice. The film is letterboxed at 2.35:1 and is enhanced for widescreen TVs. The picture is crystal clear and the color palette (especially when focusing in on the 60s fashions) is top-notch. There are no obvious defects in the source print. The Dobly Digital 5.1 soundtrack is impressive (note the plane crash), but a bit timid in spots. The DVDs interactive menus are very nicely done (and in stereo too!) The DVD contains a theatrical trailer and cast/crew bios. There are also DVD-ROM features which allow the viewer to access the script and print out dance instructions so that you can swing along with Brendan Fraser. |
