When Illinois Wesleyan University decided to give director/writer/actor Kevin Smith an honorary doctorate degree and have him give the Commencement Address, our reader Wesley Drew and his friend decided to drive over to the place and stake out some seats for the speech.

“While looking for a place to park, we found ourselves across from the university president's house and standing outside, talking to a few fans was Mr. Smith himself,” Welsey remembers. “Taking the opportunity as it presented itself, we quickly parked the car and joined the group. Kevin was cool and didn't mind talking to fans for a few minutes. He signed a couple of comics and a movie and even posed for this picture. We didn't want to bother him too much so we made ourselves scare and found a place where we could watch the ceremony.”

As expected, Smith’s speech was funny, according to Wesley, and the young filmmaker offered a few good stories, including the story of how he had written a draft of the new Superman movie. This meeting sure made Wesley’s day, and we’d like to thank him for sharing it with us!
