What happened to the Internet?

As I was looking through reader comments in our Coffee section I realized that where cluttering the comments there with highly inappropriate content. , 90% of them for pornographic content, have been posted to the section in the past week or two. As a result I have been for the time being, until I have decided upon an alternative.
I am, of course, aggravated at the situation and I am disappointed just how the online world has degenerated. What used to be a really cool place of value has turned into a single-huge spam robot and home for hackers, crackers and thieves. How did we get to the point that people now have to spend hundreds of dollars just to keep their computers operational, free of email viruses and spam attacks? How did we get to the point that it is acceptable to flood every conceivable outlet with porn, be it by email, online postings and web forums?
People go to jail for indecent exposure when they take a leak at a tree, but it is completely okay - and seemingly without consequence - for anyone to send graphic pornography to 5-year old children. Why don't we have legislation in place to get rid of these activities? The Internet is not nearly as anonymous as most people would think and it IS possible to track down the culprits. Why are they not stopped? Why do we allow them to hide behind foreign-country legislature?
Instead of waging petty wars and spending tens of billions of dollars in having our troops killed in countries that should take care of their own problems, wouldn't it make more sense to spend more money on education, healthcare, public safety and maybe the safety of computer users?
For the time being, please visit our if you wish to make your voice heard – and please, do. We are eagerly looking forward to some great conversations with movie fans from around the world.
